Summary:

The MA/LPN will serve in a team-based role as part of the patient-centered medical home care delivery model. Primary responsibilities will include care coordination and clinical support duties. The Medical Assistant/LPN functions as part of the health care team to provide support, and timely healthcare delivery to achieve optimal outcomes. Will support the clinical care team in the care and treatment of patients, in a manner that promotes quality patient care. Supports and follows through with the vision, mission, and goals of Ponca Health Services.


Essential Responsibilities and Duties:


  1. Actively participates with team members in the delivery of physical and psychosocial dimensions of patient care.
  2. Prepares exam rooms and equipment to facilitate treatment and examination of patients by setting up instruments/equipment and stocking supplies, per provider protocol.
  3. Prepares patient for provider exam by reviewing medical records, weighing patient, checking vital signs, performing medication reconciliation and obtaining information relevant to patient care.
  4. Assists providers to facilitate patient treatment by retrieving tests and medical records and obtaining lab work as directed.
  5. Assists and/or performs phlebotomy with proper labeling and handling of specimens.
  6. Ensures accuracy of verbal/point-of-care (POC) order entry and completes appropriate documentation without error.
  7. Assists with dressing changes, minor procedures and performs EKG testing.
  8. Dispense/administer medications/injections to patients as directed by provider.
  9. Recognize significant changes in patient condition and take appropriate action.
  10. Assists nursing staff and Community Health Representatives with the completion of patient referrals.
  11. Assists patients with case management services as needed or determined by provider.
  12. Be able to assist in other areas of the clinic when determined necessary by Nurse Manager/Management. This will include but not limited to the Medical Records department and front-end clinic help.
  13. Inspects and maintains equipment condition according manufacturer specifications.
  14. Assists in maintaining room cleanliness and supply inventories.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Relationships and Authority:

This position has no supervisory duties.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:

The position is located within an outpatient medical clinical setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the clinic. This role also routinely encounters patients who may have contagious illnesses. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 20 pounds. This position is subject to emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.


Qualifications:

Minimum:

  1. High School Diploma or GED.
  2. Graduate of an accredited school for medical assistants or practical nursing
  3. Competency in phlebotomy procedures
  4. Able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification within three months of hire date, if not already certified.
  5. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  6. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  7. Valid driver's license and be insurable.
  8. Successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  9. Able and willing to travel.

Preferred:

  1. Licensed Practical Nurse
  2. Certified Medical Assistant
  3. One year experience working as a medical assistant or licensed practical nurse
  4. First Aid and CPR Certified.
  5. Knowledge and understanding of Public Law 93-638: Indian Self-Determination Act.
  6. Special certification and/or experience as required by area.
  7. One-year experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.

Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized tribe. However, all qualified individuals are eligible.
